Most coaches see the importance of faster sport acceleration and go to great lengths to fine-tune the motor program and efficiency of linear movement and speed. However, when it comes to attaining the total development of sport movement mastery and proficiency, many of these training methods will come up short because they are missing a big piece of the puzzle: they neglect to take the time to optimally address the deceleration capabilities necessary to stop on a dime and position the body for efficient reacceleration in an opposite direction.
This course will present an in-depth look into the importance of training to enhance one’s capabilities to decelerate more rapidly. At the heart of this discussion will be exercise methods to increase the efficiency of the eccentric contractions that occur during the force absorption phase of any explosive sport movement. We will also examine how the attainment of optimal movement mechanics will lead to modifications to the biomechanical and neuromuscular qualities important during this phase.
Learning Objectives for Lecture:
- Students will be able to learn the importance of placing an emphasis on the development of more efficient deceleration qualities for athletes
- Students will be able to understand the key athletic performance factors related to the attainment & mastery of deceleration capabilities
Learning Objectives for Hands-on:
- Students will be able to determine which types of training means/methods place an emphasis on developing effective sport deceleration
- Students will be able to understand the proper execution and teaching points associated with training means/methods devoted to sport deceleration
